O'Neal was the centrepiece of the Lakers in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, averaging 26.3 points and 10.7 rebounds while shooting 57.6% from the field. Named to the All-NBA Second Team and finishing sixth in MVP voting, he had fully established Los Angeles as his home since signing from Orlando in 1996.

The Lakers went 31-19 with a developing Kobe Bryant at shooting guard, reaching the Western Conference semifinals before falling to the Spurs, led by Tim Duncan.

Taking the hobby to the 'net

As the information superhighway exploded in popularity, Fleer/Skybox released this iconic insert.

A nod to this new Internet thing, featuring 15 scoring legends known for screaming their way taking the ball to the net. Kind of like our 56K modems at the time screaming each time we hit the ‘net.

Fleer completely embraced the concept, giving each player a faux email address, using photography of most players aggressively taking it to the net and even including a fan mail message on the back of each card.

These cards are a true late 90’s internet time capsule that’ll bring back memories for anyone who was a basketball fan during the era of dial-up modems, chat rooms and the early days of the World Wide Web.
